Ramen for all Seasons

The famous quote attributed to Gertrude Stein, “a rose is a rose is a rose”, is often interpreted as “things are what they are”.

It would seems most of us still remember ramen as the original cheap stuffs that we had taken for granted. That perception still bears with us when we look at the prices of some ramen todays, never mind why we willingly pay more for other junk foods…

Ramen packs a decent amount of calories, it’s a concentrated food source in a very economical package - an ideal budget stretcher for those who needs it, like many of us at one time or another. Instant ramen coincidentally played such a vital role in Japan at the time of great needs just after the last war that today the Japaneses revered it with national pride as one its most significant innovation.

Like most good things from overseas, it will take time to reach our shore and even longer before they become generally known. We’re playing catchup with the progresses made in ramen’s innovation. The humble beginnings of ramen have paved way to a wide varieties of gourmet ramen and instant noodles representing hundreds of cuisines. I posted the term “gourmet” ramen once on another blog and got more than just a skepical response. To paraphrase what a Long Island native in New York City once said, “Why should I travel, we have everthing here.”

There really are ramen for all seasons, just that you have not tasted them here yet…
