The Art of Microwaving…
You can cook almost anything in a microwave, the trick is to do it well. Fortunately, there are only a few pointers to learn to help you along the way for doing ramen.
The first thing that you have to consider is the container which to hold the contents to be cooked. With package type ramen, you need your own bowl and read the next section.
Paper usually do well in the microwave. Both plastic and paper containers should not be completely closed or covered during cooking or the trapped heat can damage it. Be very careful handling the container when it’s hot too, you might want to put a plate under it before starting.
Paper lid with shiny foil on bottom-side causes very hot temperature in microwave. It should be removed before using the bowl/cup ramen in microwave cooking or it can melt or burn the container.
For cooking that just require adding hot water, there are two ways to do it. The easy way for beginners is to heat up enough hot water separately in the microwave and then add it to the container holding the noodles. Cover with lid or plate and wait the suggested time before serving. This method avoid the boil-over problem.
In the case of container with perforated inner foil for draining out the water as per direction, that is only way to do it.
If you know how long microwave takes to heat up the water, you can do it directly using the noodles own container. You might want to do this in several shorter times at first, instead of all at once to avoid the boiling over problem. Check to see if everything is cover with hot water, you may need to stir it over at this point. Now leave it in the microwave and wait the suggested time before serving.
In any cases, you can do another 30 seconds or so uncovered in the microwave, if it still need more cooking.
For package instant noodles, the boiling have to take place in the microwave. Get a microwaveable bowl that can hold the suggested amount of cooking water with some room to spare. Get the water boiling first in the microwave. Now add the noodles and anything else that need extra cooking, just as if you were using the pot, and stir well. Cooks in the microwave uncovered for the cooking time.
You might want to do this in several shorter times at first, instead of all at once to avoid the boiling over problem, especially if you had added the seasoning too. In between, you can check if everything is cover with hot water and you may need to stir it over at this point. You can always add more times until the noodles suit you.
Powder or liquid soup base don’t really need much cooking and usually can be added in last. Any suggested cooking with the soup base is done so the noodles get better flavored, like with thick Udon or Korean type noodles. Dried vegetable pieces do need to follow cooking time.
