Morinaga Milk Caramel

Morinaga’s Milk Caramel is a delicious classic dark caramel with a history dating back from the Meiji period. This company started more than a century ago and its special milk caramels were once a privilege on Showa Emperor’s birthday as an Imperial Gift for children to enjoy.

Each box contains 12 caramel pieces from an inner sliding tray. The semi-soft milk caramel has a special rich nutty butterscotch taste.

Sugar, presumably transferred to Japan by a Chinese Buddhist priest called Ganjin (Jianzhen 688-763) for the first time, was one of the valuable import items in Japan and rather used as a kind of medicinal substance for many years. It was in the late Meiji era when it had ordinary people tempted to taste for pleasure.

This milk caramel is a rediscovery of a lost treat from yesteryear. I can only remember having it once in my growing up years, it was love at first taste and the secret was lost in memory until now!
